Internal Art - a talk by Caroline Demoise, master trainer of the Tai Chi for Health programs

7:18
Tai Chi is considered an "internal martial art", but what exactly does that mean? When you think of tai chi, you think of the movements that characterize Sun, Yang or Chen style. When you see single whip or snake creeps down, you identify that as tai chi. But when you see someone swinging a golf club or hitting a tennis ball, that movement doesn't register as tai chi, but it has an internal component, just like tai chi does. What you put into an external movement to make it effective and powerful comes from the internal.
Tai chi is an external art when all you focus on is choreography. Where I put my arm, when to step and remembering what movement comes next, now that's external. Bringing depth into the choreography involves making friends with your energy body, feeling your alignment and coordinating arms, legs and torso during movement. In depth you coordinate breathing and internal relaxation with external movement. You are going internal when you allow your arms to follow the energy set in motion by your intention so that "wave hands like clouds" becomes a fluid, coordinated expression of mind/body. You are stalking depth in tai chi when your mind is still and you live deeply in your body with awareness.
During my first session with a new student who has expertise in Neuro-linguistic programming, she commented that when she watched me move through the TCA choreography, she saw me accessing the kinesthetic and auditory areas of my brain. That was a fascinating observation that I found very compatible with how I experience moving from internal awareness. My focus is inward to feel. Feeling your body is kinesthetic. My body was listening to my intention and following cues to monitor alignment and maintain the quality of song as I moved.
After being in Dr. Lam's Depth of Tai Chi for Arthritis workshop, a student commented to me, "I have been practicing this form for several years and I feel like a fraud". "I thought I knew this form". But what had really happened was that this student had moved beyond the choreography into the internal realm, where each movement suddenly felt different and unfamiliar. He had opened the door to the internal and that is progress.
The curriculum of depth involves practicing the underlying principles with enough repetition to create visible internal expression through external movements. Just watch Dr. Lam do tai chi and you will see what I mean! Think of cultivating the internal and expressing it through tai chi movement as being similar to carving a sculpture from a block of stone. This takes time. The intention is in the artists mind. Each chiseling movement shapes the final creation. The internal art of tai chi is shaped in the same way. You are the block of stone. Practicing the form is the carving tool.
Repetition and moving slowly help you digest the fine points within each movement. Fluidity and agility emerge slowly over time. Creating "song" in your body takes awareness, perseverance and focus. Expressing depth is supported by a long term relationship with your teacher. The Chinese masters invested a lifetime in perfecting the internal in their art. Each year that you invest a week in revisiting your favorite form, you embrace more of the internal. Give yourself this luxury to grow with your form. Listen with your body and feel what practicing the principles has to teach you.
Come back next year and go internal.

Wheeled Chair 24 Forms

8:01
Dixie Kindred, tai chi instructor, her medical condition inspired her to create Wheeled Chair 24 Forms.

From Dixie: "In February I was diagnoses with Charcot foot. After I was told about what could possibly happen, I began to wonder if I would ever be able to do tai chi standing. I became depressed, as I love doing tai chi and I love teaching it. I did a lot of thinking about what I could possibly do, because I didn't want to be limited to one form seated and not be able to turn and move. I wanted to move around. Finally, the light bulb went off! I wanted to be able to do the 24 form and maybe others, so I purchased a used armless secretary's chair, then purchased a strap and buckle for a seat belt (safety first). I went to the studio where I teach tai chi and proceeded to try out my chair. My student came in and we did the 24 form together with me using my chair. I was able to move, turn and do kicks while in my chair without the extra weight on my feet. It felt great, although at this time I am still standing while I do tai chi. Maybe this can help others to see that things are possible and that they too can feel the freedom of movement with tai chi and the qi flowing, even while seated."

A Brief History of Research on Happiness

5:52
Stephanie Taylor, MD, PhD, Master Trainer, Monterey, CA, USA

Happiness has not historically been a focus of psychological research. Most research, especially in the United States, is focused on dysfunction rather than function. The majority of research is either psychiatric disease treatment, or methods of behavioural conformity and increased work efficiency.

There is a small movement within the psychological community that focused on optimal positive functioning rather than dysfunction. It began about fifty years ago and was called the Human Potential Movement. It is still a minority approach but some of the basic concepts have become a part of our culture. The best recognized theory is self-actualization-the motive to realize all of one's potentialities. You have seen this in many marketing campaigns exhorting you to be the best that you can be, particularly in sports. These marketing bits give you the warm feeling of accomplishment, but it is usually fleeting, since you are usually sitting on the couch when it occurs.

Recognizing that this minority view within psychology is widely use to manipulate our behaviour, how can we take this back for our own benefit and the benefit of our society? Let us recast optimizing potential as a psychology of happiness.

For the purpose of this discussion, I will define happiness as fulfilment, tranquillity and bliss. It is scientifically defined by the new generation of researchers who are using advanced techniques to study positive states of mind in highly accomplished meditation practitioners. One of the meditation techniques studied is called Focused Attention (FA). Initially, studies used complex analysis of EEG waveforms. More recently we have functional MRI and PET scans which illustrate ongoing dynamic brain function. Functional MRI measures change in blood flow related to neural activity. PET scans measure change in glucose utilization related to neural activity. Being able to see a picture of what the brain is doing is extremely compelling. It is more convincing for most of us than a mathematical analysis. There are two interesting preliminary results emerging from the early research. The first is that there is no normal brain. At UCLA the International Consortium for Brain Mapping placed a newspaper advertisement for a normal control group. Only 10% of the 1,685 individuals who responded to the advertisement qualified as a normal control group. This has tremendous implications for research. The second early result is that the capacity and talent for focused attention is hereditary but also can be modified by training. Both of these are extremely heartening for the future of our culture and for the future of individuals.

Tai Chi practice is often called a moving meditation. I would propose that the research on meditation does inform our practice of tai chi. As practitioners and as teachers, we are all aware of the importance of focused attention. How many times does your tai chi practice falter if your mind wanders? Our practical experience of tai chi training is completely in line with the research on Focused Attention meditative techniques. Many research studies of tai chi practitioners show an increase in well being (happiness) in regular practitioners. There is also an increase in happiness with regular meditation. I believe the underlying neurological mechanisms are the same. Future research will bear out this generalization. The Centre for Investigating Healthy Minds at the University of Wisconsin celebrated its grand opening May 16th, 2010. The tag line for the celebration was: Change your Mind, Change the World. The centre has an interdisciplinary focus using the tools of functional MRI mapping, endocrine and immune function and, most exciting, epigenetic mapping. We know there is a tremendous amount of neural plasticity and the new studies show that there is an even greater amount of genetic plasticity. You can access the website at- http://www.investigatinghealthyminds.org/

This is exciting research and a credit to the founders of the Human Potential Movement. In the meantime, we need to practice and to be happy. It is nice to think that there is a science behind our happiness. As we strive to be sound solid citizens of good works, may we also choose to establish happiness as our first principle.

Dr Lam practicing tai chi on river of rocks 09

1:38
At the last Exploring the Depth TCA workshop in Melbourne I met Mary Ann wearing a T-shirt which says, Strong like a Rock, Flow like a River. This is a beautiful way to describe the inner strength of tai chi. It also bring me to tell you about this amazing place in Tasmania called River of the Rocks. I felt so much energy I stood on the rocks and performed a stationary Tai Chi @ Work.

Let me suggest to you to find a rock that speaks to you, or a tranquil river, practice your tai chi there. Allowing yourself to open your mind to the beauty and the power of nature, and feel the harmony and inner strength with your practice.
